Unit Brief
About the Unit
Cities occupy only 3% of the world’s landmass, yet house more than 50% of the global population (UN Population Report, 2019). As such, they are often considered as the engines of global development (World Bank, 1991). However urban areas and their residents use a disproportionate 70% of global resources. The patterns of consumption, pollution, socio-cultural alienation, and environmental disparities make many cities unliveable, unsustainable, and vulnerable to global events and challenges. It is, therefore, evident that to achieve global sustainability, cities around the world need to be sustainable (Jenks and Jones 2010). In turn, these cities need to continue to attract people beyond economic migrants, by offering a resilient and liveable environment to live and contribute to human society.
Mission
This Design Unit approaches issues of liveability in the city of Calicut, in Kerala, India. This is a city which is undergoing tremendous urban transformations whilst facing numerous environmental challenges, issues of waste management, social equity and economic resilience. Students of the unit seek to identify urban issues, research them, and offer architectural solutions to mitigate them.
Approach
Students of the design unit explore the link between urban form and sustainability. Projects take the form of relational propositions that condition and are conditioned by the complex layers of the cityscape. Key stages of the unit process include: 1) Grounding by developing skills to read and model cities as complex systems, conduct literature and archival research, and critically analyse existing masterplans. 2) Research in identifying a key issue of interest. 3) Action working in groups, to develop a strategic action plan for the city. 4) Re-action in proposing a comprehensive architectural intervention, or catalyst project which will trigger the transformation of Kochi towards a more liveable cityscape.
